Resilience Part 2

I was talking to a parent of one of my students on the phone this morning and we got talking about how the majority of kids were able to take the return to school after 6 months off, in their stride.   It is a real credit to the kids and their parents that the return to school was so smooth.  A lot of work was done by parents to help prepare their children for coming back and this was appreciated by the teachers and those of us in schools.   Kids are resilient . . . when we allow them to be.   Often it is our concerns, fears and baggage that are the things that are weighing our kids down.  As parents we maybe think a little more about what we say in front of kids.  We want them to be encouraged and built up.  We don’t want them to have to always face a barrage of negativity.   They are maybe more resilient that us too – and that’s a good thing!

Some people think that resilience is all about success and being successful.  It’s not.  It’s all about being able to deal with stuff in the right way.  Being able to know when to release the stress and when to get help and how to talk about the things that are causing us worry at our core.

The question then is, ‘How resilient are you?’ Are you ready to take on challenges or will you buckle under the pressure.

In this short series – As part of my look at Growth Mindset – I am going to take a look at how we can maybe try to help build resilience.  Take a look at my second where I continue to delve into the issue of resilience and how we can actually try to build our kids up in a positive way.

2.  How resilient are you and how do we build resilience?
